In the other parts of the world, yoga is linked with asanas or postures like Hatha Yoga which are famous fitness exercises but in Indian Schools, Yoga is seen as a means of enlightenment-Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Raja Yoga. Important Hindu texts like Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, Hatha Yoga, Pradipika are the basis of yoga, which was written centuries back in India.
The practice of yoga involves traditional elements like the involvement of the moral and ethical principles, postures designed to increase the fitness of the body, spiritual philosophy, mantra chanting, quieting of the breath and stillness in the mind.

Advocators of yoga see the daily practice as the beneficial in itself for both body and mind but in Indian traditional yoga schools, progress is made by providing experience in Samadhi, which is an advanced stage of meditation where the emphasis is given for the absorption of inner ecstasy. An ultimate aim of yoga is realized- an attainment of liberation (Moksha) from the sufferings, and the cycle of the birth and death that’s Samsara.

The yogis gain mastery over their body, mind and soul and transcendence of desire. They also realize the true essence and nature of reality and gets enlightened where they experience union with the God or self. The enlightenment can also be explained as the reduction of the ego, and perceiving of the non-dual of the universe. For the normal person yoga can become a way for the love of God, or nourishing the compassion and insight of the real truth.

Another most important element of the Indian Schools is the consideration of the Yoga teacher as a spiritual teacher which is rarely found in the other parts of India. Guru or a teacher is seen as a personification of the divine. The guru guides the students through the principles of yoga and takes him through this yogic journey. Thus the enthusiastic yogic student has to show his devotion towards his guru. Conventionally the knowledge of yoga is passed down through the generations-chain of gurus and their students. This is in Hindi known as guruparampara.

When a student links himself to a particular teacher, he shares a common bondage with him creating yoga communities where the practices are shared. Though the chanting of the Mantras like AUM, singing of the spiritual songs are same in all the schools yet the elements might be different. These elements are the multitude of approaches that different schools of yoga adopt.

Yoga is a way of life, though it can be adapted in many ways by the people but if the aspiring yogis are serious in adopting yoga and become a yoga teacher they should select a good Yoga School of India as here in India that they would find a path of reaching their destined destiny of becoming a true yogi.
